The Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage, also known as the Camino de Santiago, is a network of pilgrims’ ways or pilgrimages leading to the shrine of the apostle Saint James the Great in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia in northwestern Spain. The pilgrimage has been popular for over 1000 years and its popularity continues to grow. In 1985, 1,245 pilgrims arrived in Santiago and by 2018, over 327,000 pilgrims received their Compostela.

There are many reasons why people undertake this pilgrimage. Some do it for religious reasons, to pay homage to St. James. Others do it for adventure or simply to stand at the edge of the then-known world and stare out at the Mare Tenebrosum, the Sea of Darkness. The Camino de Santiago was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1993, which has also contributed to its popularity.
